Cancel your insurance only after the vehicle has been picked up and the title has been handed off. Use that pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date when you call your insurer. Do not cancel early; you could still legally own the car, and an uninsured loss or registration-related lapse can create problems. If your situation requires plate return, registration cancellation, or another DMV step before insurance cancellation, do that first and confirm with the Rhode Island DMV.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and hand-off
Before you call your insurer, make sure the car is no longer in your control. Confirm the pickup happened, the keys were released, and the signed title was handed off as directed by OceanState Donor. Keep your pickup paperwork and a copy or photo of the signed title. If pickup is still pending, keep insurance active until the hand-off is complete.
Handle plates or registration
Next, handle any plate or registration step that must come before ending coverage. Some states require plates to be returned or a registration to be canceled before insurance is canceled. Others allow insurance cancellation once the transfer is complete. If you are unsure which order applies to your vehicle, contact the DMV and follow its instructions before calling your insurer.
Call insurer with date
Call your insurer after the transfer steps above are done. Give the donation date, which should be the pickup and title hand-off date, and ask that the insurance change take effect on that date. Do not backdate to a date before pickup. If the insurer needs documents, offer the pickup receipt, title-copy photo, or donation paperwork you have.
Remove or cancel coverage
If this was on a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle and keep the rest of the policy active. If it was your only car on the policy, ask to cancel the policy after the hand-off date. Continuous-coverage note: if you will drive another vehicle soon, arrange replacement coverage before you cancel the old policy.
Request any premium refund
If you paid ahead, ask whether a prorated refund is due from the effective cancellation or removal date. Refund handling depends on the policy terms and billing status, so ask the representative to state the amount, method, and expected delivery process in plain language. If there is a loan, billing plan, or recent payment, ask how that affects the refund.
Keep written confirmation
Before ending the call or online session, ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle, policy number, effective date, and whether the policy was canceled or the vehicle was removed. Save the email, letter, or confirmation screen with your donation records. Also keep the pickup paperwork and title hand-off proof for tax and DMV questions later.
Documents to keep together
Put all insurance and donation records in one folder. Keep the written insurance confirmation, pickup receipt, donation acknowledgement, title-copy photo if you made one, and any plate or registration receipt. Use the same donation date everywhere unless a document shows a different legal transfer date. If your insurer, DMV, or tax preparer asks about the transfer, you will have a clean timeline. Do not throw away the old insurance card until you have the cancellation confirmation. See our Release of Liability After Donating Your Car guide.
Common questions
Can I cancel insurance before pickup if the car is not being driven?
No. Keep coverage active until pickup and title hand-off are complete. Even if the car is parked, you may still own it before the hand-off. Canceling early can leave you exposed if the car is damaged, stolen, or involved in a loss before the donation transfer is finished.
What effective date should I give the insurer?
Use the pickup and title-transfer date, unless your paperwork shows a different legal transfer date. Tell the insurer you donated the vehicle and want the removal or cancellation effective on that date. Do not choose an earlier date just to save premium.
What if this was my only insured car?
If the donated vehicle was your only car on the policy, you will usually cancel the policy after pickup, title hand-off, and any required DMV step. If you expect to buy or drive another vehicle soon, ask about keeping continuous coverage or starting new coverage before the old policy ends.
Will I get a refund after canceling insurance?
You may receive a prorated refund if you prepaid premium beyond the effective cancellation or vehicle-removal date. The amount depends on your policy, billing status, and any recent payments. Ask the insurer to confirm the refund amount and send the confirmation in writing.
